Amy Crouch

"Flatness is just one of the possible options in terms of contemporary painting."
- Simon Callery

Amy Crouch’s works ask the almost impossible question; what is a painting? To her, the traditional aspects of painting are an artist applying paint to a cotton canvas which has been stretched around a wooden, rectangular frame, held together using staples and presented on a wall.

Crouch’s artworks explore how far she can interrupt the traditional conventions of a painting without it becoming something that is no longer a painting. For example; does the surface have to be flat? What if some of the canvas was cut out and thrown away? What if the canvas was to be removed from the stretcher all together? Is it still a painting then?
